March 21 is Day Against Racial Discrimination
March 21 is Day Against Racial Discrimination. The date was established by the United Nations (UN) in memory of the Sharpeville Massacre, which occurred in 1960 in South Africa, when apartheid police opened fire on peaceful demonstrators demonstrating against segregationist laws, resulting in the death of 69 people.
The objective of this day is to raise awareness about the need to combat racism, xenophobia and all forms of racial intolerance in the world. The date also reinforces the importance of promoting policies of inclusion and equality, guaranteeing the human rights of all people, regardless of their origin or skin color.
Several countries hold events, lectures and campaigns to encourage reflection on structural racism and the adoption of effective measures to eradicate racial discrimination. In Brazil, civil society organizations and government institutions promote educational actions to strengthen the commitment to a more just and egalitarian society.
