March 20
March 20 is French Language Day, in honor of the cultural and historical richness of the language spoken by millions of people around the world. The date was established by the United Nations (UN) to highlight the importance of French as one of the official languages of the organization and as one of the main means of international communication.
The choice of March 20 is linked to the creation of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), founded in 1970, which brings together countries and territories where French is spoken or has cultural relevance. Currently, the language is used by around 320 million people on all continents and is one of the most studied languages in the world.
During the celebration, various cultural events, lectures, film screenings and educational activities take place in French-speaking countries and in institutions that promote the teaching of French. The date also reinforces the role of the language in diplomacy, literature and the identity of the peoples who use it, highlighting its impact on global linguistic diversity.
