March 20 is Dysphagia Awareness Day
March 20 is Dysphagia Awareness Day, with the aim of raising awareness among the population about this condition that affects the ability to swallow food and liquids. Established by Law No. 13,959/2019, the date seeks to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate treatment to avoid serious complications, such as malnutrition, dehydration and respiratory infections.
Dysphagia can be associated with several neurological diseases, such as stroke, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, in addition to occurring in the elderly and patients with head and neck cancer. The problem is often overlooked, as symptoms, such as frequent choking, coughing when eating and the sensation of food stuck in the throat, can be confused with temporary difficulties.
During National Dysphagia Awareness Day, health professionals carry out information campaigns, lectures and free services to guide the population on prevention, diagnosis and available therapies. Treatment may involve monitoring by speech therapists and dietary changes, ensuring a better quality of life for patients. The date reinforces the need to increase knowledge about dysphagia and the importance of access to specialized medical support.
