Glaucoma
Glaucoma, a day dedicated to raising awareness about this silent eye disease, which can cause irreversible blindness if not identified and treated in time.
Glaucoma occurs due to increased intraocular pressure, which leads to degeneration of the optic nerve and progressive loss of vision. Since the condition develops asymptomatically in the early stages, many people only notice the disease in advanced stages, when visual damage is already significant.
This date is part of World Glaucoma Week, promoted by health institutions in several countries. The campaigns seek to raise awareness about the importance of regular eye exams, especially for risk groups, which include people over 40, diabetics, hypertensive patients and individuals with a family history of the disease.
Treatment of glaucoma may involve eye drops, oral medications, laser or surgery, depending on the severity of the condition. However, prevention and early diagnosis are essential to avoid permanent damage to vision and ensure quality of life for patients.
