Rare Disease Day
February 29 Rare Disease Day, a symbolic date chosen for its rarity in the calendar. In non-leap years, the date is observed on February 28. Established in 2008 by EURORDIS (European Organization for Rare Diseases) and other entities, the occasion aims to raise awareness of rare conditions and support patients and their families.
Rare diseases affect around 300 million people worldwide, and are defined by their low occurrence in the population. In Brazil, the Ministry of Health recognizes more than 8,000 rare diseases, which often face challenges related to diagnosis, treatment and support.
On this day, organizations, doctors, researchers and governments promote actions to increase knowledge about these conditions and highlight the importance of public policies that guarantee access to early diagnosis and effective treatments.
World Rare Disease Day is an opportunity to give visibility to stories of overcoming challenges, promote social inclusion and reinforce the need for investment in research and specialized medical care.
