February 18 is the feast day of Saint Theotonius
February 18 is the feast day of Saint Theotonius, honoring the first Portuguese saint canonized by the Catholic Church. Theotonius (1082–1162) was an exemplary priest and a figure of great religious and social influence in Portugal during the 12th century.
Born in Toureiro, Viseu, Saint Theotonius dedicated his life to the service of God and charity. He was one of the founders of the Monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra, where he served as prior and played a fundamental role in the reform of religious life in Portugal. Known for his deep spirituality, he refused prestigious positions, including that of bishop, to dedicate himself to prayer and service to the needy.
The canonization of Saint Theotonius took place in 1163, one year after his death, highlighting his holiness and the importance of his work for the Church. He is revered as the patron saint of Viseu and the Monastery of Santa Cruz.
On this day, masses and celebrations will be held in several parishes in Portugal and in Portuguese communities abroad. The example of Saint Theotonius continues to inspire the faithful to live with humility, faith and dedication to others.
