February 7th is the day of Indigenous Peoples' Struggle
February 7th is the day of Indigenous Peoples' Struggle in Brazil. A date dedicated to reflecting on the resistance, history and rights of indigenous peoples. The date honors the memory and struggle of thousands of indigenous people who have faced and continue to face challenges to ensure the preservation of their cultures, lands and traditions.
The day was established in recognition of the essential role of indigenous peoples in the construction of national identity and seeks to raise awareness in society about the historical inequalities that these groups face, such as the invasion of their territories, the exploitation of natural resources and the denial of their fundamental rights.
The choice of the date is related to the historical struggle of indigenous leaders, such as the Guarani chief Sepé Tiaraju, killed on February 7, 1756 during the resistance against colonizing troops in the lands of the Sete Povos das Missões, in southern Brazil.
On this occasion, indigenous organizations and social movements promote activities such as debates, demonstrations and cultural events to value the rich cultural diversity of indigenous peoples and highlight the importance of land demarcation and the defense of their rights...
