February 9th is Greek Language Day
February 9th is Greek Language Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the richness and historical importance of one of the oldest and most influential languages in the world.
Instituted in 2017 by the Greek government and widely recognized by the international community, the day was chosen in honor of the death of the poet Dionysios Solomos, author of the Greek national anthem and a central figure in the country's literature. The Greek language, with over 3,000 years of documented history, is considered the birthplace of countless philosophical, scientific and literary concepts that have shaped Western civilization.
The date is marked by cultural events, lectures and educational activities, which highlight the contribution of the Greek language to areas such as philosophy, democracy, arts and sciences. Greek words such as “democracy” (demokratía) and “philosophy” (philosophía) continue to be part of the global vocabulary, highlighting the language’s enduring influence.
International Greek Language Day is also an opportunity for the Greek diaspora around the world to strengthen their cultural ties by promoting language learning and preserving their traditions.
