January 27th is Port Wine Day
January 27th is Port Wine Day, created in 2012 by the Center for Wine Origins. The date aims to celebrate and promote the iconic Portuguese wine, produced exclusively in the Douro region, considered the first demarcated region in the world since 1756. Port wine is known for its unique production technique, which involves interrupting fermentation with the addition of wine brandy, resulting in a sweet and strong drink.
This wine is produced from grapes from the Douro Demarcated Region of Portugal and stored in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia. Its name "Port Wine" dates back to the 17th century, when it began to be exported to the world via Porto. The date also highlights the importance of the Alto Douro Wine Region, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 2001.
Port wine is widely known for its diversity, with types such as Ruby and Tawny, which vary according to aging, as well as White Port and Rosé Port, which also appeal to different palates. The wine can be consumed neat, as an aperitif, or even in cocktails, reflecting its versatility and relevance both in the present and in the future.
