October 16th is Bread
October 16th is Bread Day, a day established in 2000 by the International Union of Bakers and Allied Workers to celebrate the importance of this essential and versatile food, present in many meals and recipes around the world. The first records of leavened bread date back to approximately 4,000 BC, when the Egyptians began to ferment a wheat dough. This food was consumed by the lower classes, while the better quality wheat was reserved for the rich. The Romans contributed to the popularization of bread in Europe, creating traditions such as cutting the dough into a cross. For Christians, bread symbolizes the body of God and sharing. The festivities include events, baking workshops, educational lectures and campaigns that highlight the diversity of bread and its contributions to health and well-being.
