On August 17, 1908
On August 17, 1908, cartoonist Émile Cohl premiered in Paris the animation "Fantasmagorie", which many consider to be the first cartoon in history. The production was simple and experimental, with only 1 minute and 40 seconds, but it presented a surrealist story with a clown made of sticks acting with morphic objects. The premiere took place at the Théatre du Gymnase Marie-Bell, which was turned into a cinema during the holidays. There are controversies about the pioneering spirit of animation, since in 1906 the American James Stuart Blackton had released a film called: "Humorous Phases of Funny Faces" (photo) which can also be considered a cartoon.
