The idea of Phoebe Buffay having a twin originated in "Mad About You" (1992). Lisa Kudrow was already a regular on the series as Ursula Buffay before "Friends" debuted. The creators found it amusing the possibility of relating the two series through sisters. During this, Leila Kenzle and Helen Hunt, who were playing characters from "Mad About You", met Phoebe at Central Perk, making reference to Ursula.
