Domestic dogs
Domestic dogs descend from gray wolves that approached human settlements in search of food thousands of years ago. Domestication began about 15,000 years ago, during the Paleolithic, through interactions between humans and more tolerant wolves. Over the millennia, dogs have played various roles in human life, from helping with hunting to being companion animals. In different ancient cultures, dogs were revered and associated with different functions, such as hunting, healing, guarding and even fighting. The world wars influenced canine evolution, extinguishing some breeds and popularizing others, such as the German shepherd and the Dobermann. After the wars, dogs were also used as guides for the blind.
