The Maine Coon
The Maine Coon cat is the largest breed of domestic cat, with a muscular body and robust limbs. Their coat is long, thick and water resistant, with a dense undercoat. They have a "mane" around their neck, more pronounced in males, and the hair on their tail is long and flowing. The paws are furry, looking like "snowshoes". They are affectionate, playful and enjoy human company. Known for their soft, calm sound, they have humble origins, descending from long-haired cats brought by sailors to Maine, USA, in the 1850s, who crossed with local cats. They are prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and hip dysplasia. Despite their size, they need regular coat care and vaccinations and parasite control. Visit purina.pt to find out more.
