The Somali
The Somali Cat is a breed of domestic cat known for its lush coat and exotic appearance. The first records of cats with Somali characteristics appeared in the 1940s. However, the breed was not developed until the 1960s, when breeders in the United States and Canada began to become interested in these long-haired cats that appeared in their Abyssinian litters. The breed is essentially a longhaired version of the Abyssinian, another popular cat breed. They are known for being extremely active, curious and playful. Due to their long coats, Somalis need regular brushing to avoid knots and tangles. Like any breed, Somalis can be prone to certain genetic conditions. Dental problems and kidney dysplasia are some of the health issues that can affect the breed.
