The Australian Shepherd
The Australian Shepherd , also known as the "Aussie", is a versatile working dog breed originating in the United States, although the name suggests an Australian origin. They are medium to large dogs known for their thick, colorful coats, which can come in a variety of patterns, including merle, bicolor, and tricolor. Originally bred to herd livestock, they are extremely intelligent, agile and energetic. Australian Shepherds are very loyal to their family and have a strong work ethic, which makes them excellent at various tasks such as herding, guarding, dog sports and therapy. They need a lot of physical and mental activity to stay happy and healthy, and do best in active, involved homes. With proper training and early socialization, they become loyal and devoted companions. Their life expectancy is generally 12 to 15 years.
