To encourage the consumption and production of ice cream in Brazil
To encourage the consumption and production of ice cream in Brazil, National Ice Cream Day is celebrated on September 23 , coinciding with the beginning of spring and the rise in temperatures in the country. The Brazilian Association of Ice Cream Industries (ABIS) chose this date strategically. Ice cream is a popular dessert, enjoyed on both hot and cold days. From its origins in China more than 4,000 years ago to its introduction to Europe and the United States, ice cream has been a delicacy enjoyed by nobles and commoners around the world. In Brazil, it arrived in 1835 with the import of ice. Since then, it has become a beloved dessert, with pitanga ice cream being a favorite of Dom Pedro II. Although it contains beneficial nutrients like calcium and protein, some commercial versions can be high in sugar and vegetable fat.
