Parable of the Good Samaritan
During a meeting with legal experts, Jesus was asked how to inherit eternal life. In response, He highlighted the two greatest commandments: to love God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself. But when challenged with the question, “Who is my neighbor?”, Jesus told a surprising story.
He spoke of a man who was attacked by robbers and left nearly dead on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. A priest and a Levite passed by but ignored the injured man. However, a Samaritan — a people despised by the Jews — stopped, cared for his wounds, took him to an inn, and even paid for his recovery.
Jesus then asked, “Which of the three was a neighbor?” The answer was clear: “The one who showed mercy.”
With this, Jesus taught that a true neighbor is the one who acts with compassion, regardless of race, religion, or background. The lesson? “Go and do likewise!”
