Vila Nova de Paiva, in the interior of Portugal, is a true archaeological treasure trove, where several necropolises and megalithic tombs stand as testimonies of ancient funerary practices and rituals. Among them, the following stand out:
The Necropolis of São Martinho de Almoneixe, located in the parish of Vila Nova de Paiva, is made up of tombs excavated in the rock, dating from Late Antiquity or the High Middle Ages (5th-8th centuries AD). These tombs, associated with Christian practices, show a transition between the Roman world and the first medieval communities.
The Orca do Pitoco do Vasco, located in the parish of Touro, is a megalithic monument that dates back to the Neolithic period, between 4000 and 3000 BC, consisting of a burial chamber and corridors that were used for collective burials.
The Orca de Pendilhe, in the parish of Pendilhe, and the Orca de Juncais, in Queiriga, are two other important Neolithic structures. Both with burial chambers and large granite pillars, they were used as collective burial spaces by Bronze Age communities.
These monuments reveal the historical and cultural richness of Vila Nova de Paiva.
