25 April is Fight Against Malaria
25 April is Fight Against Malaria Day, a date established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2007 to recognize global efforts to combat malaria and reinforce the importance of prevention, diagnosis and effective treatment of the disease.
Malaria, caused by parasites of the Plasmodium genus and transmitted by the bite of mosquitoes of the Anopheles genus, remains a leading cause of preventable death in several regions of the world. In 2022, approximately 249 million cases and 608 thousand deaths were recorded in 85 countries.
The day also serves to mobilize additional resources, keep malaria high on the political agenda and empower affected communities. WHO and global partners emphasize the importance of continued investment and sustained political commitment to achieve a world free of malaria.
