April 24 is Barbecue Day
April 24 is Barbecue Day, a date that pays homage to one of Brazil's most emblematic culinary traditions. The celebration was established in 2003 by State Law No. 11,929 of Rio Grande do Sul, which recognized the gaucho barbecue as a typical dish of the state.
The choice of the date refers to the founding of the first Center of Gaucho Traditions (CTG), the 35 CTG, on April 24, 1948, in Porto Alegre. The gaucho barbecue is characterized by the preparation of meats seasoned with coarse salt, roasted over coals or wood, on skewers or grills, under manual control.
The origin of the barbecue in Brazil dates back to the 16th century, in the pampas region, where the first inhabitants roasted beef over an open fire. Over time, this practice became consolidated as a symbol of fraternization and cultural identity, especially in the south of the country.
