tApril 16 is Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome
TApril 16 is Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome Day, and serves to raise awareness of this rare genetic condition, promote inclusion, early diagnosis and scientific research.
Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) is caused by the partial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 4 (4p-). This disorder causes a range of symptoms that vary from person to person, but include developmental delay, seizures, characteristic facial features, growth problems and, in many cases, language and mobility difficulties.
The syndrome is named after the doctors who first described it in the 1960s: Ulrich Wolf and Kurt Hirschhorn. Although it is a very rare condition, advances in genetics have allowed for better diagnosis and interdisciplinary treatment.
Families, associations and health professionals use this day to share experiences, provide support and fight for a more informed and inclusive society. Today represents a moment of unity, love and hope for everyone living with Down Syndrome, reminding us that differences also deserve to be celebrated and respected.
