April 18 is Children's Book Day
April 18 is Children's Book Day in Brazil, a date dedicated to encouraging reading among children and young people, in addition to honoring the birth of Monteiro Lobato, one of the pioneers of children's literature in the country. Instituted by Law No. 10,402, of January 8, 2002, the celebration highlights the importance of books in the educational and cultural formation of new generations.
Monteiro Lobato, born on April 18, 1882, in Taubaté (SP), is widely recognized for creating the universe of Sítio do Picapau Amarelo, which introduced iconic characters such as Emília, Narizinho and Pedrinho. His works combine fantasy and elements of Brazilian culture, promoting children's imagination and stimulating interest in reading.
Throughout the country, schools, libraries and cultural institutions organize activities such as storytelling, reading workshops and theater performances, aiming to bring children closer to the literary world.
