Princess Jasmine: the iconic character
Princess Jasmine, from the classic "Aladdin" (1992), is one of Disney's most iconic characters. Created by Ron Clements and John Musker, and animated by Mark Henn, Jasmine also appeared in the sequels "The Return of Jafar" (1994) and "Aladdin and the 40 Thieves" (1996), as well as the animated series. In the 2019 live-action version, she was played by Naomi Scott.
In the original version, Linda Larkin voiced the character, while Lea Salonga sang her songs in the first film. In the sequels, Liz Callaway took over the musical part. Jasmine was inspired by Princess Badroulbadour, from the tale "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp".
The character, forced to marry when she turns 16, rejects suitors and seeks freedom, fleeing the palace. Her strong personality and free spirit divided critics, with praise for her independence but also criticism of her role in the story.
Behind the scenes, Linda Larkin almost lost the role because her voice was considered "too high", but she won the role after a guided session. Jasmine's look was inspired by a visitor to the Disney-MGM Studios theme park and the sister of animator Mark Henn.
