March 5 is Classical Music
March 5 is Classical Music Day in Brazil. The date was chosen in honor of the birth of composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959), one of the greatest exponents of classical music in the country and internationally recognized for his work inspired by Brazilian culture.
Instituted in 2009, the date seeks to value national classical music, encouraging the recognition of great composers and performers who contributed to the cultural development of Brazil. In addition to Villa-Lobos, the country has other important names in classical music, such as Carlos Gomes, Camargo Guarnieri and Radamés Gnattali.
Throughout National Classical Music Day, several institutions promote free concerts, recitals and performances to bring the public closer to this musical style. The date reinforces the importance of classical music in the artistic and cultural formation of the country, keeping the tradition of this genre alive in the Brazilian scene.
