March 1, Minnesota
March 1, Minnesota Day, celebrates the rich history and culture of this state, also known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Minnesota became the 32nd U.S. state in 1858 and is famous for its natural beauty, such as Lake Superior and the Mississippi River, which originates in Lake Itasca. The state has a rich heritage, with the Dakota Sioux, Ojibwa and Menominee tribes as its first inhabitants.
The capital, St. Paul, founded in 1838, and its neighbor Minneapolis, form the famous Twin Cities. Minneapolis is notable for its extensive network of indoor walkways, connecting shopping centers, restaurants and hotels. The northern part of the state, Arrowhead, is known for its pristine landscapes and the Northern Lights, especially during the mild summers.
Minnesota is also a culturally significant state, with influences from Scandinavian and German immigrants and a vibrant arts scene, with renowned museums such as the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Walker Art Center. Minnesota is also the home state of Bob Dylan, winner of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature.
National Minnesota Day is a celebration of the diversity and beauty of this unique state.
