February 24
February 24 Women's Vote Day is celebrated annually in Brazil on February 24, marking the historic date when Brazilian women won the right to vote. This achievement was the result of decades of female struggles and mobilizations and was guaranteed by Law No. 4,121, enacted in 1932, during the government of Getúlio Vargas.
Before this achievement, Brazilian women did not have the right to participate in elections, being considered second-class citizens. The fight for women's suffrage gained strength with feminist movements, such as the Women's Movement for Peace and Freedom and the Brazilian Federation for Women's Progress, which sought recognition of political equality between men and women.
The first election in which women voted in Brazil was held in 1933, with women also being able to run for office. Since then, the date has become an important milestone in the country's history, symbolizing not only the right to vote, but also women's ongoing struggle for equal rights in all spheres of society.
