February 17 is the day of the Seven Founders of the Servite Order
February 17 is the day of the Seven Founders of the Servite Order, honoring the seven men from Florence, Italy, who in the 13th century founded the Order of the Servants of Mary. These saints dedicated their lives to devotion to the Virgin Mary, prayer and service to the Christian community.
The founders – Bonfilius, Bonagiunta, Manetho, Amadio, Sostegno, Uguccione and Alexius – were merchants who abandoned their work to dedicate themselves to religious life. Inspired by their Marian faith, they retired to Mount Senario, where they founded the order. In 1888, Pope Leo XIII canonized them together, highlighting their contribution to the Church.
On this day, the faithful around the world celebrate masses and prayers in honor of the Seven Founders, remembering their spiritual dedication and the values of humility and service that guided their lives. The order, also known as Servites, remains active, with a presence in several countries, promoting devotion to Mary and charitable actions.
The date is an opportunity to reflect on the example of faith and unity of the founders, whose story has inspired Christian communities for more than seven centuries.
