February 14th, Congenital Heart Disease
February 14th, Congenital Heart Disease Day, aims to raise awareness about a condition that impacts millions of people around the world. These diseases, present from birth, encompass a series of structural problems in the heart and are the main cause of congenital malformations in newborns.
The date highlights the importance of early diagnosis, access to appropriate treatments and support for families facing the challenges related to congenital heart disease. It also seeks to encourage the advancement of scientific research and the training of health professionals to improve the quality of life of patients.
Health organizations and patient associations around the world will promote educational campaigns, lectures and events to raise funds and expand access to treatments. On social media, the hashtag #CHDAwarenessDay will be used to share stories of overcoming challenges and raise global awareness.
Data from the Ministry of Health indicate that congenital heart disease is the third leading cause of death in babies before the 30th day of life, representing around 10% of the causes of infant deaths and between 20% and 40% of deaths caused by congenital malformations.
