March 5th is the day of the Brazilian Philatelist
March 5th is the day of the Brazilian Philatelist and pays tribute to those passionate about collecting postage stamps, an activity that involves history, art and culture. More than a hobby, philately allows collectors to explore different periods and events recorded on stamps, becoming an important way of preserving historical heritage.
Brazil stood out in this field when it became the second country in the world to issue postage stamps, right after England in 1840. On August 1st, 1843, the first Brazilian stamp was released, the famous "Olho de Boi". The country's first philatelic organization was founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1886, and years later, the first commemorative stamps appeared, such as the series dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the Discovery of Brazil, launched in 1900.
Brazilian philately has achieved major milestones, such as the issuance of the world's first stamp in Braille, in 1974. In addition, in 1973, the Brazilian Philatelic Federation (FEBRAF) was created, and in 1979, Brazil hosted BRASILIANA, its first international philatelic exhibition. Today, the practice is still alive, bringing together enthusiasts and promoting exhibitions and events that encourage new generations to preserve this tradition.
