February 11 is Women and Girls in Science Day
February 11 is Women and Girls in Science Day, a date established by the United Nations (UN) in 2015 to highlight the contribution of women in science and promote gender equality in the scientific field.
The date's main objective is to encourage girls and women to pursue careers in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), in addition to combating historical inequalities that limit their opportunities for access and advancement in these fields.
Currently, only about 30% of researchers in the world are women, and female participation in areas such as computing, physics and engineering remains especially low. Therefore, the celebration of this day is marked by events, debates and initiatives that seek to inspire young talents and highlight examples of female scientists who are making history.
Organizations, universities and schools promote lectures and workshops to reinforce the importance of ensuring equal access to scientific education and creating more inclusive environments in academia and industry. Furthermore, the day celebrates the achievements of women who, over time, have broken barriers and made great scientific advances.
