February 10th, the day of Saint Scholastica
February 10th, the day of Saint Scholastica, honors the patron saint of contemplative nuns, as well as Benedictine nuns. Saint Scholastica was a nun and the twin sister of Saint Benedict, considered the founder of the Benedictine order, and her life and devotion are an example of dedication to religious and spiritual life.
The Story of Saint Scholastica
Saint Scholastica was born around the year 480, in Italy, and, from a young age, was attracted to religious life. Together with her brother Saint Benedict, she founded a religious community, which, later, would become one of the most important in Western monasticism. Scholastica dedicated her life to prayer, service to God and the spiritual help of others.
One of the best-known stories of her life is the episode in which, on a visit to her brother, she asked him to stay longer to talk about the things of God. When he refused due to his vows, she prayed and asked God to allow the conversation to continue, and then a severe storm prevented Saint Benedict from returning to his abbey, allowing them to spend more time together.
