February 5th is Mammography Day
February 5th is Mammography Day in Brazil, a date created to raise awareness among the population about the importance of mammography exams in the early detection of breast cancer. The date reinforces the importance of prevention and early diagnosis as essential ways to increase the chances of a cure and save lives.
The Importance of Mammography
Mammography is an imaging exam that allows the identification of changes in the breasts, such as nodules or other anomalies, often before symptoms appear. It is one of the main allies in the fight against breast cancer, which is the most common type of cancer among women in Brazil and worldwide, except for non-melanoma skin cancer.
Experts recommend that women over 40 years of age undergo the exam annually or as directed by their doctor, especially those with a family history of the disease.
Origin of the Date
National Mammography Day was established by Law No. 11,695, of June 12, 2008, with the aim of expanding access to mammography in the Unified Health System (SUS) and raising awareness in society about the need for preventive actions.
