February 1st is Galgo
February 1st is Galgo Day, a date that marks the end of the hunting season in Spain. During this period, many greyhounds are abandoned or mistreated, a practice that associates the date with a reflection on the treatment of these animals.
Galhounds, known for their elegance and speed, are often used in hunting and racing. However, at the end of the hunting season, many of these dogs are discarded, facing situations of abandonment and mistreatment. It is estimated that between 50,000 and 100,000 greyhounds are killed each year in Spain, many of them in cruel ways.
Animal rights organizations use this date to raise awareness about the situation of greyhounds and promote responsible adoption. The aim is to ensure that these dogs receive the respect and care they deserve, away from abuse and neglect.
In Portugal, although the practice of hunting with greyhounds is less prevalent, the date serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting all animals and combating abandonment and mistreatment.
