January 24th is Moebius Syndrome
January 24th is Moebius Syndrome Day, with the aim of raising awareness about this rare neurological condition that affects the cranial nerves, responsible for facial and eye movements. The date seeks to give visibility to people who live with the syndrome, promoting inclusion and empathy.
Moebius Syndrome is characterized by the absence or underdevelopment of the cranial nerves, which results in the inability to perform facial movements, such as smiling or frowning, and, in many cases, compromises lateral eye mobility. Despite their limitations, people with the syndrome can lead full lives with the appropriate medical support, therapies and social inclusion.
January 24th was chosen in honor of Dr. Paul Julius Möbius, a German physician who first described the condition in the 19th century. On this date, health organizations, support groups and communities around the world carry out awareness campaigns, lectures, educational events and social media activities to inform the population about the challenges faced by people with the syndrome and their families.
