January 30th is the Non-Violence and Culture of Peace Day
January 30th is the Non-Violence and Culture of Peace Day, with the aim of promoting peace, non-violence and the peaceful resolution of conflicts throughout the world. The date was established in 2013 by the United Nations (UN), with the aim of raising awareness in global society about the importance of eradicating all forms of violence and cultivating a culture of peace, respect and solidarity.
The choice of the day is a reference to the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, an Indian pacifist leader, who was fundamental in the fight for India's independence and in the promotion of non-violent methods of resistance. On January 30, 1948, Gandhi was assassinated, and the date was adopted to reinforce his commitment to non-violence and peace.
The World Day for Non-Violence and a Culture of Peace is an opportunity for governments, non-governmental organizations, schools and citizens in general to join together in activities that promote dialogue, education for peace and respect for human rights.
