January 28th is the Fight Against Slave Labor
January 28th is the Fight Against Slave Labor day, with the aim of raising awareness in society about the persistence of contemporary slave labor and reinforcing the fight to eradicate this practice in Brazil.
The date was established in 2009, through Law No. 12,064, as a tribute to the employees of the Ministry of Labor who were murdered in the Unaí Massacre in 2004. The crime occurred during a rural inspection in Unaí, Minas Gerais, and killed three labor inspectors and a driver, highlighting the risks faced by those who fight labor exploitation.
In Brazil, contemporary slave labor includes situations such as exhausting workdays, degrading conditions, debt bondage and restriction of freedom, practices that violate human dignity and the fundamental rights of workers.
The date is marked by educational campaigns, debates and inspection actions promoted by public agencies and civil society organizations and international institutions. In addition to remembering the victims of slave labor, the day serves to reinforce the need for effective public policies and firm action to combat this violation of human rights.
