January 28th Data Protection Day
January 28th Data Protection Day, with the aim of raising awareness among individuals, companies and governments about the importance of protecting personal information and ensuring privacy in the digital environment.
The date was established in 2006 by the Council of Europe and marks the anniversary of the signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty aimed at protecting personal data, signed in 1981. Since then, the date has gained global relevance, especially in times of increasing digitalization and data exchange on digital platforms.
Several countries carry out educational actions, debates and information campaigns on this day, addressing issues such as digital security, data protection legislation – such as the LGPD (General Data Protection Law) in Brazil and the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) in the European Union – and the ethical use of personal information by companies and organizations.
International Data Protection Day also serves as a warning to strengthen security measures and good practices in the use of technology, aiming at preservation of citizens' fundamental rights to privacy and control over their personal information.
