Conclave: Gains Prominence and Controversy
The film Conclave, directed by Edward Berger and starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow, has emerged as one of the favorites for the 2025 Oscars. The production, which explores the behind-the-scenes of the papal election, is now available for streaming on the Peacock platform.
The film has recently received mixed reviews. Megyn Kelly, a well-known media commentator, criticized "Conclave" for its depiction of morally corrupt cardinals and the revelation of an intersex pope, considering it offensive and disrespectful. In response, screenwriter Peter Straughan defended the film, stating that it is not anti-Catholic, and director Edward Berger emphasized that his goal was to portray human and complex characters, without intending to attack the Catholic Church.
Despite the controversies, "Conclave" has been recognized in several awards. At the Alliance of Women Film Journalists ceremony, the film received awards for Best Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini and Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan. In addition, the ensemble cast was honored with the award for Best Casting and Casting Director... Did you know?
