January 27 is a day of Holocaust Remembrance
January 27 is a day of Holocaust Remembrance celebrated worldwide to remember the victims of the Holocaust, one of the darkest periods in human history, during which millions of Jews, Roma, prisoners of war, homosexuals, disabled people and other groups were systematically persecuted, tortured and exterminated by the Nazi regime in Germany during the Second World War.
The date was chosen to commemorate the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp on January 27, 1945, by Soviet troops. Auschwitz was the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp, where an estimated 1.1 million people, mainly Jews, lost their lives.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day serves to educate younger generations about the horrors of the Holocaust in order to ensure that such atrocities are never repeated. The date is marked by ceremonies at memorials, schools, museums and other institutions, as well as events to raise awareness and reflect on human rights, intolerance and discrimination.
