January 24 is Education Day
January 24 is Education Day, with the aim of highlighting the importance of education in the individual, social and economic development of all people, around the world. The date was proclaimed by the United Nations (UN) in 2018, as part of its effort to promote the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 4, which aims to ensure inclusive, equitable and quality education for all.
The celebration of International Education Day highlights the transformative role of education in combating poverty, gender and racial inequality, and in promoting peace. In addition, the date is a moment to reflect on the global challenges faced by education, such as the lack of access to schools, the scarcity of resources and the exclusion of children and young people in some regions of the world.
Around the world, events, conferences and educational activities are held to engage governments, educational institutions, teachers, students and communities in promoting the right to education. The date also serves to mobilize efforts to ensure that more people have access to quality education, regardless of their origin or social status.
