Saint Sebastian's Day: why is it celebrated on January 20?

January 20 is the day of Saint Sebastian, a date dedicated to the saint who is considered the patron saint of the city of Rio de Janeiro and one of the most venerated in the Catholic tradition

Saint Sebastian was a Roman soldier and Christian martyr, recognized for his courage in defending the Christian faith during the period of persecution in the Roman Empire. He was sentenced to death by order of Emperor Diocletian, being shot with arrows, but survived and continued to spread his faith until he was martyred again.
