January 13 is Korean American Day
January 13 is Korean American Day in the United States, honoring the significant contributions of the Korean American community to the country's history, culture, and society.
The date commemorates the arrival of the first Korean immigrants to the United States on January 13, 1903, when a group of 102 people landed in Hawaii to work on sugar plantations. This event was the beginning of a journey that led to the growth of a vibrant Korean American community, now with millions of members spread throughout the country.
Korean American Day was officially recognized by the United States Congress in 2003, on the centennial of Korean immigration. Since then, the day has been celebrated with cultural, artistic and educational events that highlight the rich Korean heritage and its influence on the economic, political and cultural development of the United States.
The celebration is also an opportunity to strengthen ties between Korean-American communities and American society at large, fostering understanding and appreciation of shared traditions and values.
