January 17 is Ceará's emancipation day
January 17 is Ceará's emancipation day, the date that marks its separation from the Captaincy of Pernambuco in 1799. The decision was made official through a Royal Charter signed by D. Maria I, Queen of Portugal, granting administrative autonomy to Ceará.
The date, known as "Ceará Day", was incorporated into the state's official calendar of events by Law No. 13,470, of May 18, 2004. Every year, official celebrations take place in the municipality of Aquiraz, the first capital of Ceará, recognizing its historical importance in the emancipation process.
This year's celebrations included cultural and civic events that highlighted Ceará's rich history and culture, reinforcing the pride and identity of the people of Ceará. Local authorities emphasized the relevance of the date as a moment to reflect on the advances and challenges faced by the state over more than two centuries of autonomy.
