January 13 is the feast day of Saint Hilary of Poitiers
January 13 is the feast day of Saint Hilary of Poitiers, one of the great defenders of the Christian faith in the 4th century and a Doctor of the Church. Known as the "Athanasius of the West", Hilary dedicated his life to combating heresies and preserving the doctrine of the Holy Trinity during a period of intense theological debate.
Born around the year 315 in Poitiers, France, Hilary was originally a pagan but converted to Christianity after studying the Scriptures and recognizing the truth in the Christian message. He was elected bishop of Poitiers and quickly distinguished himself for his profound scholarship and pastoral zeal.
Hilary is especially remembered for his fight against Arianism, a heresy that denied the divinity of Christ. Exiled for defending the true faith, he wrote important theological works that explained the relationship between God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Among his writings, the most notable is "De Trinitate" (On the Trinity), a treatise considered fundamental to the understanding of Christian doctrine.
Pope Pius IX proclaimed Hilary a Doctor of the Church in 1851, recognizing his contribution to theology and the defense of the faith. Today, believers around the world ask for his intercession and are inspired by his courage and wisdom.
