December 28th Lifeguard
December 28th Lifeguard day, to recognize the work of professionals who work to prevent drownings and water accidents on beaches, rivers and swimming pools, ensuring the safety of bathers . The profession originated at the beginning of the 20th century on the beaches of England, quickly spreading around the world. In Brazil, the first lifeguards began working in the 1950s, on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, as volunteers, mainly fishermen. In 1990, the activity began to be officially coordinated by the Military Fire Department. The choice of December 28th is related to the day of devotion to the angel Damabiah, protector of people at sea. Interestingly, it was on that date, in 1970, that the Brazilian Military Brigade formed the first exclusive lifeguard team, in the city of Porto Alegre.
