December 24th day of the Feast of the Seven Fishes
December 24th day of the Feast of the Seven Fishes, an Italian tradition celebrated on Christmas Eve, especially among Italian-Americans. Originally from Southern Italy, the festival consists of a dinner with seafood dishes, such as cod, squid and mussels, as a way of abstaining from eating meat on Christmas Eve, following Catholic tradition. The number "seven" has symbolic meanings, especially in the Bible, but in some families the number of dishes varies. Although it has religious roots, the festival is more of a cultural celebration, preserved especially by Italian immigrants in the United States and other countries.
