December 13 is the feast day of Saint Odile
December 13 is the feast day of Saint Odile, and is especially significant in several regions of Germany and among Catholic communities. Saint Odile is considered the patron saint of the blind and of sight, and her life and legacy are celebrated primarily in Catholic traditions. Saint Odile was born in the 7th century to a noble family in the Alsace region of what is now France. According to tradition, she was born blind and rejected by her father, who was expecting a son. Odile was sent to a convent, where she received an education and became a woman of faith. After her blindness was miraculously cured, she became a nun and founded a monastery in Hohenburg, Alsace, where she dedicated herself to religious service and helping those in need. In popular tradition, Saint Odile is invoked for protection against eye diseases and for the promotion of visual health.
