December 10
December 10 is Jane Addams Day, to celebrate the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. Established in 2007, this unofficial holiday honors Addams' contributions as a social worker, feminist, and peace activist. Born in 1860, she co-founded Hull House in Chicago in 1889, a center that provided social services to underprivileged communities. In addition to her work at Hull House, Addams co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). She is also recognized as the founder of social work in the United States. The day serves to reflect on her achievements and to promote equality and social justice.
