December 5th is Family and Community Medicine (FCM) Day. It was recognized as a specialty in Brazil in 2002 and is fundamental in Primary Health Care (PHC) in the SUS and in supplementary health. Focused on the comprehensive care of individuals and families, FCM approaches the health and disease process as something influenced by biological, psychological and social factors. Family doctors follow patients throughout their lives and resolve most complaints in primary care. Training involves two years of residency, and the work is carried out in teams, with nurses and community agents.
